THE NEWS

Six astronauts are currently aboard the ISS as members of Expedition 30, including two Americans, was set to return from the station on a March 30 flight that will be postponed until mid-April or the first half of May.

There are currently spacecraft docked at the station that can be used to transport astronauts back to Earth, she said.

"Each Soyuz that flies to the space station delivers three resident crew members. That same vehicle stays docked and then brings them back to Earth at the end of the mission.”

Since NASA scuttled the U.S. space shuttle program last year, Russia has sole responsibility for sending astronauts to the ISS.

An unmanned Russian resupply craft that launched successfully from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan is set to dock with the International Space Station. Loaded with 2.9 tons of food, fuel and equipment.

If you are on orbit not far from the Earth, but want to transfer to a higher orbit- how should you do it? You can’t just blast upwards- that will put you in a strange elliptical orbit, not the desired circular orbit. The best idea is to use an elliptical transfer orbit which touches the smaller and larger circular orbits each at one point. You can use just two boosts to go in and out of the transfer orbit. This is a pretty good example of how moving about in space isn’t as simple as just pointing the rocket nose in the right direction (unless you want to waste fuel). [more] [code]
